What type of a zoo is the Denver Zoo?

I am looking at going up there with some friends, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the zoo and its "goals" I suppose. Is it a zoo focused on conservation/preservation and education, or is it just a zoo with animals in captivity for entertainment more then anything else? Does it promote a good environment for its animals, or is it small with trained animals working in shows? Thank you!
